Condition

This picture is executed on two boards which are brought together by a single horizontal join. The panel itself is flat, stable, cradled, and appears to have been trimmed by a couple of centimeters on the right side. Overall this picture is in quite lovely condition with only a few small scattered retouches visible in the background. There are very few fine retouches along the joint itself which is normal and in fact there are less than what is often found along a panel join. The varnish appears fresh and does not immediately need to be replaced, and both the detailing and coloration in the flowers are very strong. The picture could be hung in its current state. In a carved wooden frame.

Catalogue Note

The prime version of this composition is Jan Brueghel the Younger’s still life formerly in the Aardenne collection, Dordrecht.1  Although the present painting imitates the work of Jan Brueghel the Younger, Fred Meijer recognizes a closer affinity to the works of Philips de Marlier from the second half of the 1630s.

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, for suggesting this work may be attributed to Philips de Marlier.
