Condition

The first of these canvases (Grand Canal with Santa Lucia and the Scalzi) has a wax relining. The overall appearance of the canvas is favorable though there is thinness in the sky with the red ground showing through. The architecture still retains much of its detail along with the gondolas on the water. UV light reveals scattered retouches in the sky as well as a more significant loss at center left measuring 2" x 5". The second composition (Grand Canal) has less of the red ground showing through but is in a similar state of favorable preservation. It too has a wax relining. UV light reveals scattered retouches throughout the sky. Most are along the edges and in particular areas of retouching are visible along the upper left quadrant. The architecture itself is in very good condition. Both pictures are in carved giltwood frames.
