Oil on canvas, with a relatively new lining. The surface is in overall good condition aside from surface dirt and dust and a certain thinness to the paint concurrent with age and the artist's technique. There is an area of inpainting in the sky above the cow's head that has discolored and is visible to the naked eye. Under UV light, this area fluoresces dully, as do some brushy areas in the sky, notably at left behind the cow, and in the ground, notably below the cow's head.
