Condition

Oil on canvas, lined. The picture surface is in generally very good condition. Some minor craquelure that is barely perceptible covers the picture surface. Some areas of thinness, especially in the knuckles and hands and in parts of the red cloak. Very minor horizontal scuff approximately 2 inches above the lower edge at left. Under UV light, the work is covered by a mottled varnish. There are minor retouches in the figure's face, notably along her hairline and the bridge of her nose. Additional small scattered dots of retouching through her chest and red cloak. Newer retouches visible in her white sleeves. The majority of the background is difficult to read. Framed in an ornate gold wood frame. Ready to hang in its current state.

In her 2011 catalogue (see Literature) Francesca Baldassari dates Giovanni Martinelli's Saint Cecilia to the early 1640s, noting the influence of Lorenzo Lippi in the smooth modeling of the face and naturalism of the figure.
