- each 158cm high, 70cm wide
each with chinoiserie figures in landscapes in a rocaille border with trelliswork and flowerheads, in a later green painted frame,
Condition
All the canvases are unlined and are slightly loose in their stretchers. The darker greens in all four canvases appear to have been restrengthened, as they fluoresce under ultraviolet light.
An oriental man kneeling: there are a number of patches of flaking paintwork, particularly in the sky, and minor losses throughout, particularly in the ornamental border on all four margins. The flaking fluoresces under ultraviolet light, suggesting that those areas have been restored in the past and are now lifting again.
An oriental man in costume: this painting is in overall better condition than the other canvases and the paint surface is stable. There is a horizontal line through the figure, possibly due to a previous fold. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals two 5cm. by 3cm. patches of restoration in the sky, and a campagin of restrengthening along all four margins in the ornamental border.
Two oriental men picking fruit: there is some flaking throughout the paint surface, particularly in the sky to the left of the man on the ladder, and in the lower margin. The flaking fluoresces under ultraviolet light, suggesting that those areas have been restored in the past and are now lifting again.
A child offering his mother flowers: there are small missing paint flecks throughout, especially in the lower right margin and upper corners. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along the left and upper margins in the ornamental border. There is also a repaired horizontal line running through the lady's waist, possibly due to a previous fold.
