Catalogue Note
This pair of tables is grounded in the anglo-palladian style of the second quarter of the 18th century made famous by William Kent (1685 – 1747) and the 3rd Earl of Burlington (1694 - 1753). The interesting form of these tables relates to a table designed by William Kent in the collection of Raynham Hall, Norfolk (Susan Weber, William Kent Designing Georgian Britain, London, 2014, p. 499, fig 18.43). The marble tables adjoining the dining room, commissioned from Kent for Houghton Hall, Norfolk, also share the eight scrolled legs, central shell motif and shells between the front legs present in this lot (Adam Bowett, Early Georgian Furniture 1715 – 1740, Woodbridge, 2009, p. 218, pl. 5:34).
