Description

  • Tallest, 28cm. high, ovoid pair 20cm. high, tapering pair 21.5cm. high; 11in., 8in., 8½in.
the ovoid pair with a berried foliate finial, domed cover above a pierced band, the tapering pair with a pierced neck, the single vase with a pinecone finial above a tapering body with ribbed square handles terminating in a lion mask on a trumpet foot and square base, all decorated with circular reserves painted with pink roses within gilt borders on an apple green ground and with scroll handles, waisted socles and square bases with concave corners, the large vase and a smaller flanking vase with interlaced LL mark in blue containing date letter q for 1769, painter’s mark X for Jacques-François pére Micaud (active 1757-1810) the ovoid pair with date letter q for 1769, painter’s mark for Jean-Jacques Pierre le jeune (active 1763-1800)

Condition

In overall good conserved condition. Attractive detail to casting. Ovoid pair: There are some firing flaws. The gilt-bronze band is a little loose and needs securing. Tapering pair: Minor tarnishing to the gilt-bronze The Single Vase: Very minor chip to inside of the cover which is not too noticeable. The handles are slightly loose but can easily be tightenend up. Very minor tarnishing to the gilt-bronze. All pieces are in good condition, with very minor areas of scattered flaking to the raised gilding only.

Catalogue Note

A garniture of three apple-green ground Pot-pourri vases and covers of matching form and decoration to the central three vases was in the Goldschmidt-Rothschild collection, sold by Ball & Graupe, Berlin, 23-25th March 1931, lot 206. A matched garniture with this ground colour and decoration, with date letters for 1769, comprising a large central vase and a pair of egg-shaped vases of similar form to those in the present lot, from the collection of George Byng, was sold at Christie's London, 9th June 2005, lot 1.
