Catalogue Note
The monogram and motto are those of Gresley of Drakelow, Derbyshire, probably for the author and Tory politician, Sir Roger Gresley, 8th Bt. (1799-1837), who succeeded to the title upon the death of his father in 1808. He, who married in 1821 Lady Sophia Catherine (d. 1875), daughter of George William Coventry, 7th Earl of Coventry, was sometime groom of the bedchamber to the Duke of Sussex and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Sir Roger, a prominent London socialite, is said to have gambled away the bulk of his fortune, which necessitated the sale of his family’s private canal, flowing between Apedale and Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.
