Catalogue Note
The arms are those of Higginson quartering Barneby and Lutley for Edmund Higginson (1802-1871), third son of John Barneby (1757-1817) of Brockhampton, Worstershire. In 1825 he succeeded to the estate of his great-uncle, William Higginson of Saltmarshe, Herefordshire, whose fortune was derived from coal mining, whereupon he changed his surname from Barneby to Higginson. High Sheriff of Herefordshire in 1828, his celebrated collection of pictures was sold by Christie’s, London, on 4 June 1846 and 16 June 1860. In 1846 he built Saltmarshe Castle (on the site of the earlier Saltmarshe House), a rambling castellated mansion which was demolished in 1955. Mr. Higginson, who was never married, died on 25 November 1871, bequeathing his estate to his nephew, William Barneby (1846-1895) of Clater Park, Herefordshire.
