A Louis XV gilt-bronze cartel clock, circa 1770

9-inch enamel dial signed Roentgen & Kinzing A Neuwied with winding squares by VIII and X, the movement with numbered outside countwheel, formerly quarter striking on four bells, later escapement, the boldly modelled rococo case composed of leaf and 'C' scrolls inset with leaf-cut frets and with a cresting of a young man playing a flute, his music held by a girl seated nearby beneath a spray of leaves and with trailing flowers on both sides

Dial has minor hair cracks at II and III but otherwise good, glass to bezel has old crack. Movement is incomplete, quarter striking train and two bells now lacking, dirty and needs complete service and overhaul. Case in good condition and retains the original gilding. With pendulum.

Peter Kinzing, was born in Neuwied in 1745. He was a self-trained clockmaker and made his first clock at the age of ten. He began his collaboration with David Roentgen about 1770. He was made Horloger de la Reine to Marie Antoinette in 1785, though he is known to have worked for Versailles as early as 1781. When Roentgen closed his Neuwied workshop in 1791, Kintzing continued to work, his business eventually being taken over by his son Christian. He retired to Mannheim and died there in 1816.
