Condition
The paintings are both in very good overall condition. They have firm relinings, have recently been cleaned and the varnish on both is clear and even.
A heron etc.: Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals strengthening in the sculpted plinth and the birds' plumage, as well as some old restoration in the sky.
Two magpies etc.: There is a small scratch in the foliage of the trees. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals less retouching than in the other canvas, though there is some minor strengthening in the birds' plumage.

Catalogue Note
Although a native of Antwerp, Casteels worked almost exclusively in England between 1713 until his death in 1749. At the time of the Wood sale in 1974, these paintings were accompanied by a second pair of canvases of exotic birds by Casteels of the same dimensions. The first of these, signed and dated 1742 and depicting a heron catching a frog, was sold New York, Christie's, 16 October 1997, lot 108. The companion is now in an English private collection.
