18 Karat Two-Color Gold, Coral, Cultured Pearl, Colored Stone and Diamond 'Memento Mori' Necklace, Tony Duquette

Of wreath design, set with carved coral skulls, with branches composed of petrified wood and red coral, accented by 21 black cultured pearls measuring approximately 16.0 to 14.9 mm, decorated with polished gold flies, further set with oval-shaped fire opals measuring approximately 15.75 carats and round diamonds weighing approximately 5.15 carats, internal circumference 18 inches, signed Tony Duquette.

In good condition. The coral skulls in shades of light to medium peach to medium orange. All with significant veining ranging from white to a darker, non-precious material. Varying degrees of polyp holes and fissures as well as areas of breakage, all of which enhance the macabre, memento mori conceit. The muted red and russet-colored sponge coral branches are significantly veined and reveal polyp holes throughout. The petrified wood in shades of bone and taupe are evenly veined with the ends revealing growth rings. The round to off-round, silvery medium-light gray to black pearls with faint to moderate blue, purple, green and pink overtones. Minor to significant blemishing in the form of pitting, ringing and uneven skins, and waxy to very good luster. The gold flies are drill-set into each pearl. The fire opals in varying shades of yellow and orange range from transparent and eye-clean to translucent. The diamonds are approximately G-H color, VS-SI clarity. The diamond-set and fire opal elements are mounted directly into the coral and petrified wood branches. The necklace is significant in size, weight and presence. The diamond-set spicules can catch on fabrics when the necklace is being taken off and on, so sturdier fabrics or bare skin may be best for wear.
