Catalogue Note
As a boy Peter Blake would often visit the cinema with his mother where he became an admiring follower of the Hollywood stars. This homage to Marilyn Monroe explores the relationship between celebrity icon and adoring fan through nostalgic childhood fantasies, and Blake’s collage technique uses her as an emblem of popular culture in a playful and affectionate way. The Marilyn Monroe White series of collages, made in 1990, uses glamorous images of the star pasted onto an aged wooden panel, evocative of his door collages in which he pasted doors with the images of celebrities. Marilyn Monroe White No.7 looks back with nostalgia at the shrine-like images which might decorate the door of a teenager’s bedroom. The concept has not lost its relevance today and Blake reinvented it in 2010, but this time depicting a goddess of the new decade, Kate Moss.
