Catalogue Note
Howard Hodgkin’s paintings and prints often refer to memories, emotional states and private experiences whilst never fully stepping into the realm of conventional representation. This work’s elliptical shape, large scale and powerful abstract and gestural paintwork leave it open to interpretation, whilst what could be an ivy leaf retains a strong element of representation. The artist has in the past resisted being called a colourist. However colour plays a fundamental role in conveying emotion in his creations and the intense green scheme in this work is strongly evocative of a thick forest canopy. Hodgkin’s works carry the aesthetic of a spontaneous creation, yet they are often the result of an extensive process of layering; for this piece the artist worked over the top of an intaglio print with the result of creating a richly layered yet almost translucent quality.
