Catalogue Note
The stonewall fields, white-washed cottages and coastline of the present work are emblems of the West of Ireland landscape that resonated so fully with Dillon - the peaceful atmosphere providing him with an escape from the political turmoils of his hometown, Belfast. Yet Dillon also delighted in the challenges this distinctive landscape provided, in the patterns created through the patchwork of fields and the constantly changing colours. In an article for Ireland of the Welcomes, Dillon wrote: 'It's the difficulty to paint this place that makes it so fascinating. It has so many aspects. It has so much to give. The fields are small and irregular, marked off by lace-like stone walls. Each field can be a different colour. A yellow field with a violet stone fringe, a brown field with a creamy-white border, and emerald one with a grey-green wall and so it can go on and on endlessly' (May/June 1955). A sketch relating to the present work was sold at Adam's, Dublin, 2 December 2008, lot 11.
