Catalogue Note
The present lot was purchased in 1973 by Julian Kean Roosevelt (1924-1986). Julian was the son of George Emlen Roosevelt, cousin to President Theordore Roosevelt, and was a prominent banker and Olympic gold medalist. A graduate of Harvard University, Roosevelt earned a gold medal in his second appearance at the Olympics in 1952, participating in the 6-meter yachting class, and later was a member of the International Olympic Committee.
Roosevelt's Rolex 1680 comes not only with outstanding provenance, but accompanied by a plethora of service documentation, original paperwork, and bills of sale. It is further complemented by several rare tags originally sold with the watch. It is interesting to note that correspondence regarding service to the 1680 dated to January, 1983 between Rolex Watch USA and Julian Roosevelt, mentions that factory servicing of the movement was completed, however a new bezel and insert were not added due to a back order on the parts. This service in 1983 cost $199.42, while the cost of the entire watch in 1973 was $249.97, only $50 more.
