A RARE BLUE AND WHITE 'PHOENIX' BASIN MARK AND PERIOD OF KANGXI

sturdily potted with steep rounded sides rising to a flat everted mouthrim, the interior vividly painted with a medallion enclosing a long-tailed phoenix soaring amidst dense cloud scrolls, surrounded by a frieze similarly decorated with phoenix and clouds around the well, the rim with a leafy lotus scroll within a brown-edged border, the exterior undecorated, the base with a six-character reign mark within a double-circle

The overall condition is quite good, except for an approx. 0.3 cm flake to the mouthrim, and minor fritting to the inner rim on the interior. There are also expected surface wear, especially to the interior, burst air bubbles, stained pinholes and occasional iron spots, including one to the central well. The outer footring has an approx. 0.7 cm kiln adhesion. The cobalt blue is slightly more bluish than the catalogue illustration.
