Description

  • porcelain
each finely potted with the upright sides flaring gently towards the rim, decorated in pastel enamels on the exterior with five roundels formed from the leaves sprouting from the central branching stem, divided by pairs of peach sprigs above and below, a stylised lappet band around the foot, the countersunk base inscribed in underglaze blue with a six-character seal mark

Condition

The overall condition of the pair is very good, except for some occasional trapped and stained burst air bubbles, as well as scattered iron spots, especially to the interior. There are also some surface scratches, especially inside the foot of one bowl, but the enamels have been generally well preserved.

Catalogue Note

A Daoguang bowl of this pattern from the Simon Kwan Collection was included in the exhibition Imperial Porcelain of Late Qing, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1983, cat. no. 32, and one from the Weishaupt Collection is illustrated by Gunhild Avitabile, From the Dragon's Treasure. Chinese Porcelain from the 19th and 20th Centuries in the Weishaupt Collection, London, 1987, pl. 56. 

For the origin of this design compare the sixteenth-century bowl from the Garner Collection, painted with a fruiting tree, included in the Marco Polo Seventh Centenary Exhibition, Venice, 1954, cat. no. 684, and sold in these rooms 14th November, 1989, lot 52.
