The quality of this stone, skillfully accentuated through the finely finished plain surfaces, perfectly complements the auspicious wishes represented through lingzhi motifs. Jade carvings in the form of single or multiple lingzhi were ideal for use as brush washer, with the fungus heads hollowed to provide shallow receptacles. 

Jade brush washers naturalistically carved in the form of single or multiple lingzhi fungus were popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties; compare an example sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 28th November 1979, lot 404; another sold in these rooms, 8th October 1983, lot 119, and a third sold at Christie's London, 12th December 1988, lot 244.
