Description

  • Jade
of cylindrical form with square projections on four sides, carved with two registers of taotie masks, each comprised of two bands of incised lines and a smaller narrow band, each centered with a pair of 'eyes', all supported on a narrow base, the stone mottled and streaked with cloudy off-white and russet inclusions 

Provenance

Acquired in the 1940s or 50s and thence by descent.

Condition

There are scattered small areas of roughness to the surface and scattered nicks to the edges. There is a 1.3 cm chip and a polished chip to the rim. Some russet coloration later added.
