Prosperity for the Future Generation
Monkeys are often paired with peaches in traditional jadeite carvings, but this particular ornament renders a loving monkey parent with a baby monkey on its back. The subject is playing on the fact that ‘monkey’ has the same pronunciation as ‘nobleman’ in Chinese, so is ‘back’ for ‘generation’. This is not only a symbol of longevity, but also carries with it wishes for one’s next generation to maintain nobility, as well as harmony in the family.
