Catalogue Note

first edition of Christina Rossetti's first book, issued privately when she was only sixteen; the poems had been written between the ages of 12 and 16. The collection, dedicated to her mother, consists of 42 poems, of which 40 are in English and two in Italian, a significant achievement for sixteen years and  Christina's formal literary début.

Bound in is a charming autograph letter signed from Christina Rossetti to a Mr. Howell, written just before this book was circulated (she speaks of it as still being "in loose sheets"). She thanks Mr. Howell for a collection of stamps he had given her, and speaks of an unfortunate letter she has receivced from Mrs. Cottle.
