Catalogue Note
First edition, third issue. With points: four notes on page 323, gothic half-title, and no price on the spine. Inscribed by Matthew Arnold, "a Monsieur Sainte-Beuve 1 janvier, 1861, souvenir affectueuse Matthew Arnold." Arnold was a disciple of Sainte-Beuve and acknowledged his strong influence. Accompanied by an autograph letter signed from Arnold to Sainte-Beuve, December 31, 1861, in French, presenting the volume, commenting on its surprising popularity and success, and admiring how it was reviving interest in and recognition of some poets.
