Catalogue Note

First edition. An anonymous private printing of a poem submitted for a university prize, which was won by Tennyson. This is Hallam's first separate publication. Tennyson and Hallam both submitted poems to the competition and marked the beginning of their friendship.  Scarce. Only three copies have been located, those at Princeton, Harvard, and Yale.

Presentation copy, inscribed "from the author" for Richard Monckton Milnes, who has annotated this pamphlet with Hallam's name, as he has also identified the authors of the other pamphlets. Monckton Milnes wasa member of the undergraduate club called the Apostles, where he came to k now Hallam, Tennyson, Thackeray, and others.

Included in the volume is Tennyson's poem, also titled "Timbuctoo". also included is the second edition of Shelley's Adonais, brought out by Hallam, Mocnkton-Milnes, and their friends in 1829. also present are pamphlets by Charles Tennyson, George Stovin Venables, Henry Lushington, Christopher Wordsworth, and others.

A fine compilation of scarce pamphlets relating to Hallam, Tennyson, the Apostles, and Cambridge University at large.
