first edition of the author's first book Coleridge and Southey, along with Robert Lovell , agreed to write a tragedy in a single day. Coleridge wrote the first act, though it took him longer. Southey contributed the second and third acts, but ultimately Lovell's contribution wasn't included and only Coleridge's name appeared on the title page. Coleridge in his dedication explained his inspiration as " to imitate the empassioned and highly figurative language of the French Orators, and to develope the characters of the chief actors on a vast stage of horrors."
