First edition, an evocative presentation copy, "Thos. Hughes, from his old schoolfellow." The recipient is famous for his Tom Brown's Schooldays, first published in 1857. This was set at Rugby School, where Arnold's father, Dr. Thomas Arnold, was headmaster, and perhaps the most widely known English schoolmaster of the 19th century. Hughes and Arnold went on from Rugby to attend Oxford together.
