Catalogue Note
Presentation copy to Greta Garbo from the illustrator. "This book is for Greta Garbo—With thanks for making the film industry and the world we live in (yesterday and today) a more beautiful and extraordinary place. Most sincerely—Hilary Knight and ME, ELOISE. Aug. 29th1987".
An unexpected association, but perhaps a fitting one, as Greta Garbo preferred a life of transient luxury, choosing to inhabit sophisticated hotels and rental properties over more permanent places of residence. Eloise preferred the Plaza of course.
Knight's connection to Garbo seems to be a personal one—his private collection included a Cecil Beaton photograph of Garbo from their Plaza Hotel Series, along with Knight's own unpublished pencil illustration of Garbo from a Vanity Fair commission in 2000.
