SINCLAIR'S LANDMARK BOOK, DEDICATED "TO THE WORKINGMEN OF AMERICA"

Perhaps the most famous of American "muckracking" novels, The Jungle exposed brutal conditions in the U.S. meat packing industry, causing a public uproar that contributed to the passage a few months later of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. The expose was first serialized in 1905 in the Socialist weekly The Appeal to Reason, where Jack London referred to it as “the ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ of wage slavery."
