Catalogue Note
After apologizing her delayed response to Beck's letter, Harper Lee reflects on the enduring popularity of her one novel: "As you may see, one change in my life brought about by To Kill A Mockingbird is that I stay several months behind in trying to answer the mail I get. I did not suspect, nor did my publishers, that the novel would be in print after more than thirty years! Indeed it has been a humbling experience, one that not many writers share, and one for which I am deeply thankful. The novel does seem to have life of its own, in a brand new world, and its continuing success is something of a mystery to me."
