first edition, presentation by the dedicatee john Kenyon, browning's cousin who first introduced the couple. The Brownings stayed with him for a few weeks in September, 1856 and it was while "under the hospitality of his roof' that this book was completed. Published 15 November, 1856, the presentation is dated four day later and Kenyon was to die not even a month after.
