Catalogue Note

Braithwaite, together with his partner John Ericsson, installed a steam boiler on the Victory, under the impression that the ship was to be used for experimental purposes, rather than a taxing and lengthy polar voyage. Upon the failure of the boiler, and after criticism from Ross himself, they published this apologia. For Ross's Explanation and Answer to Mr. John Braithwaite's Supplement see lot 1087).
