Catalogue Note

According to the author, a Canadian painter, he travelled almost alone along "the great chain of American lakes, the Red River Settlement, the valley of the Saskatchewan... across the Rocky Mountains down the Columbia River to Oregon, Puget's Sound, and Vancouver's Island... In that period I executed numerous portraits of chiefs, warriors, and medicine-men of the different tribes among whom I sojourned. The Indian fishing and hunting scenes, games, dances, and other characteristic customs, also occupied my pencil" (preface).
