Catalogue Note
The eminent naturalist Joseph Banks (1743-1820) stood successfully for election as President of the Royal Society in 1788. This cache of letters reveals his assiduous campaigning and the widespread support he was able to muster among the fellowship of the society. He was to remain as President of the Society for more than thirty years.
