Catalogue Note
In October 1921 A. & C. Black first published Songs from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. The words were by Lewis Carroll and extracted from the Alice books by the composer Lucy E. Broadwood. Charles Folkard (1878-1963) provided the illustrations (see also lots 234-236). The book would enjoy some popularity and was reprinted in 1978. This illustration was the front cover illustration and is entitled 'Alice and Her Friends' within the contents of Folkard’s illustrations. The artist appears to have labelled the piece 'Queen Alice' and intended the illustration as the frontispiece.
A. & C. Black published an edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1929 using these illustrations. It is one of Charles Folkard's best-known books.
