These drawings were produced for the story 'Paddington Weighs In', published in the BBC Blue Peter Annual ("Eighth Book") for 1971. The preliminary drawings include a number of abandoned drawings and comments ("decided against use of big human figure", etc.) Many of the sheets of preliminary drawings are dated from March 1971.

Harry Hargreaves (1922-2004) started his career in illustration as an animator before contributing a significant number of daily comic strips ("Panda", "The Bird" and "The Hayseeds") to newspapers. His work appeared in a number of periodicals including Punch, Lilliput, Tatler and Countryman. From 1969 to 1980 he created illustrations of Michael Bond's Paddington Bear for BBC Blue Peter annuals, working closely with the author.
