Catalogue Note
A. & C. Black published the artist's edition of Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales in 1912. A. Duncan Carse (1876 - 1938) mostly worked in oils and tempera with two of his works selected by Cunard for the Queen Mary. The sixteen drawings, offered here, were published on pp. xiii, 34, 55, 61, 63, 88, 103, 117, 162, 214, 246, 300, 319, 346, 362 and 371. They illustrate stories including 'The Little Mermaid', 'The Emperor's New Clothes', 'The Tinder Box' and 'The Ugly Little Duck'. The decorated capitals are as follows: W (p. 23), T (p. 35), I (p. 89), I (p. 104), H (p. 129), P (p. 136), W (p. 167), T (p. 233), E (p. 247), H (p. 289) and F (p. 326). Vignettes are from pp. 166, 228, 232, 313 and 373.
