Two volumes issued before formation of the Vale Press, comprising:
PAPER

Longus. Daphnis and Chloe..., 1893, 4to, one of 210 copies, 37 wood-engraved illustrations by Shannon and Ricketts, original cloth, [Ransom Vale b], extremities slightly worn--Marlowe, C. and G. Chapman. Hero and Leander, 1894, one of 220 copies, 7 wood-engraved illustrations by Shannon and Ricketts, original vellum gilt with geometric design, [Ransom Vale c]--both in collector's folding boxes, some spotting and browning, repairs to some torn leaves (2)

Catalogue Note

The two books offered here, are "considered preliminary to the later work [of the Vale Press]" (see Ransom, p. 434). The first includes "THE VALE" lettered at the foot of the spine and the second includes the "VP" design.

Also included in this lot are an autograph letter signed by Chas. H. Shannon to "White" (addressed from "The Vale"), an impression of Ricketts' device for Copeland & Day, together with an "In Preparation" notice for Hero and Leander.
