Catalogue Note
The inscription reads: 'C.W. Mathews, from Rosebery, on the jubilee of their friendship, 1865-1915.'
The inscription refers to Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery and his friend the British lawyer, Sir Charles Willie Mathews, 1st Bt. (1850-1920). The latter, who was ‘famous for his courtroom flair and aggressive advocacy,’ was involved in several notorious cases, including that of Oscar Wilde’s suit for libel against John Douglas, 9th Marquess of Queensbury and Lord Colin Campbell’s acrimonious divorce proceedings.
