Catalogue Note

William, Earl of Lonsdale, was the cousin and heir of Sir James Lowther, one of the wealthiest men in 18th century England.  Created Earl of Lonsdale in his own right in 1807, he had Robert Smirke spend eight years turning Lowther Hall into Lowther Castle.  At the same time, he commissioned a substantial dinner service from Rundell, Bridge and Rundell, made by Paul Storr; his appreciation of silver is shown by his owning one of the five versions of Flaxman's "Shield of Achilles".

Another pair of vegetable dishes from the service was sold Christie's, London, December 12, 2002, lot 41.
