Catalogue Note

The kneeling woman is a recurring motif in Pater’s work. In Le Bain, as well as in the center of another painting by the artist also at the Petit Trianon of Versailles, La pêche, where one can also observe a young woman kneeling by the water, bending over to readjust her friend’s fishing line while she stands on the bridge, with hair and a draped dress that present strong similarities with our study.
