Catalogue Note

Linked directly to Pater's painting Monsieur de Pourceaugnac, now in the British Royal Collection (inv. no. 400672), this delicate red chalk study of a man in a tricorn hat is undoubtedly preparatory for the gentleman standing in the centre of the composition.

The distinctive numbering in the lower left corner indicates that this drawing originates from the 'Album Groult,' an important volume of more than 500 sheets, the great majority of them by Pater, which was largely dispersed at auction in Paris on 19 December 1941. See also the following four lots.
