• gilt full plate movement, finely engraved balance cock with cherubs and dolphin heads amongst foliate scrolls, index plate with serpent's head pointing to the regulator scale, round baluster pillars, repeating on a bell, dust ring with decorative engraving • gold champlevé dial, Roman numerals, outer Arabic minute track, signature cartouches, quatrefoil half-hour divisions, blued steel beetle and poker hands • inner case with pierced and engraved band featuring dolphin heads and birds, pulse piece to the band at 7 o'clock, outer pierced case, outer case with marker's mark AR (Adam Roumieu), hallmarked 1711 • dial and movement signed Francis Gregg, London

Condition

The movement is running at the time of cataloguing, however it is not striking the quarters correctly. The dial with light scuffs and small areas of the black wax lacking to the numerals. Inner case with indentations to the rear. Indentations to the outer case.

Catalogue Note

Francis Gregg was apprenticed to John Clowes in 1691. He was registered at Gt. Russell street in 1711. It seems that Gregg was plagued by financial difficulties, Baillie notes that he was declared bankrupt whilst at St. James’ (1714-1729) and was later declared insolvent whilst at York street in 1743.
