Description

  • George Nakashima
  • TWO "WEPMAN" TABLES
  • American black walnut

Provenance

Acquired directly from the artist
Thence by descent to the present owners

Condition

Overall in very good condition. The wood surfaces with minor discoloration, minor surface scratches, a few minor edge abrasions and minor surface dirt consistent with age and gentle use. The lower portions of the feet with expected concentrated traces of use. The smaller table with a few minutes remnants of white house paint to the edge of the top. The wood presents with a rich reddish-brown color and with wonderful nuance to the figuring. The current condition of the tables reflects the care and attention of the previous owner. The original owners of this work met Nakashima in 1955 when they had a piece of furniture to repair. They enjoyed art and had an eye for what was modern. Mr. Nakashima explained that he did not repair but he did create furniture. When they saw his beautiful, organic pieces they were hooked. What began with a purchase of a headboard, developed into a close personal relationship and the acquisition of a number of pieces over the years. This piece represents one a portion of the works acquired for their living room, dining room and bedrooms. ---
