  • George Nakashima
  • DRESSER
  • American black walnut

Provenance

Acquired directly from the artist
Thence by descent to the present owners

Condition

Overall in good original condition. The wood has a wonderful figuring that presents with wonderful variations of hues. The wooden surfaces with minor surface scratches, some minor abrasions, some minor discolorations and light surface dirt consistent with age and gentle use. The base of the dresser with expected traces of wear. The top and sides of the dresser with some scattered water discoloration, which are minor and not visually distracting. The proper left back edge of the dresser with a few minor chips at mid-height, hardly visible when the dresser is placed on a wall, as the design is intended. A wonderful piece that combines Nakashima’s incredible craftsmanship with great functional qualities. The original owners of this work met Nakashima in 1955 when they had a piece of furniture to repair. They enjoyed art and had an eye for what was modern. Mr. Nakashima explained that he did not repair but he did create furniture. When they saw his beautiful, organic pieces they were hooked. What began with a purchase of a headboard, developed into a close personal relationship and the acquisition of a number of pieces over the years. This work was acquired along with other works on offer for a bedroom. ---
