Condition
Overall in very good condition. The wood surfaces present with a wonderful figuring with rich tones of wood going from honey to red brown. The surfaces with minor surface scratches and a few scattered abrasions consistent with age and gentle handling. The top with minor surface soiling, a few scattered water stains and very minor discoloration. The current condition of the table reflects the care and attention of the previous owner. A wonderful small scale unique work by Nakashima with a great provenance history. The original owners of this work met Nakashima in 1955 when they had a piece of furniture to repair. They enjoyed art and had an eye for what was modern. Mr. Nakashima explained that he did not repair but he did create furniture. When they saw his beautiful, organic pieces they were hooked. What began with a purchase of a headboard, developed into a close personal relationship and the acquisition of a number of pieces over the years. The present lot has a very personal story. It was made from a fallen cherry tree that originated in the owner's yard, which was given to Nakashima to create a unique furniture piece. ---
