The table is offered with two extension leaves designed by Nakashima for this particular table, and executed in the manner that is complementary with the dining table. The leaves are designed in a manner that the wood grain runs perpendicular to the graining of the rest of the table. This creates a wonderful depth in the design. The leaves with a few minor surface scratches and surface stains consistent with gentle use. Please contact the department for additional photographs of the table with the leaves. The legs of the table with some surface scratches and abrasions consistent with use. A beautiful table of great scale when viewed in person, displaying an intricate design by Nakashima and with great sculptural presence. The original owners of this work met Nakashima in 1955 when they had a piece of furniture to repair. They enjoyed art and had an eye for what was modern. Mr. Nakashima explained that he did not repair but he did create furniture. When they saw his beautiful, organic pieces they were hooked. What began with a purchase of a headboard, developed into a close personal relationship and the acquisition of a number of pieces over the years. ---
