- 'El Hombre Triste (The Sad Man)'
a unique object, toned gelatin silver prints with applied paint, collaged elements, and gold leaf, mounted, signed on the reverse, framed, 1998, no. 2 from an edition of 15
Condition
This lot is in overall excellent condition. The piece is a collage of four sheets, each of which is mounted to a support. The two lower quadrants are sheets of paper with red and gold paint covered in gold leaf. The top left quadrant is composed of a transparency, a backing sheet of paper coated with red and gold paint and gold leaf, and a small, circular transparency featuring a portrait of a man that is stapled on top. The upper right quadrant is a toned gelatin silver print featuring a portrait.
In the upper right quadrant, there is a one-inch-long hard vertical crease located in the extreme lower right corner of the sheet.
The two sandwiched sheets that make up the upper left quadrant are secured together in each corner with a single stitch of heavy red thread.
The sheet perimeters of the lower left and right quadrants are curling inward slightly and feature uneven surfaces and small areas of gold leaf that do not lay flat on the support. These variations create a rich, undulating texture and are presumably inherent qualities of the media used.
