Catalogue Note
In the 1970s, Irene Chou focused on the 'pile painting' technique, which challenged her to systematically layer ink onto the thin paper and simultaneously achieve a thick, full, and concentrated result (see lots 2929 & 2938). "I made numerous attempts at creating lines, encompassing in the lines both my inner world and the outer objective world. The texture and rhythm of the lines gave expression to the fluctuation of my feelings towards life, love, and the mystery of the universe. I created, at the same time, a new universe in my own heart; one that was beautiful and tranquil; one that embodied the sublimity of life and sincerity which was capable of altering the courses of the planets." For Irene Chou, her art was truly a means of emotional expression. Using painting as a means of personal catharsis for a series of tragic life events, Irene Chou later employed the 'impact painting' technique, which liberated her work from structured compositions and achieved a highly rhythmic and dynamic form of expression.
