Catalogue Note
Taihu Stone is a study of a scholar rock inscribed with an excerpt regarding the topic of Heaven and Earth from The Outer Chapters in the Zhuangzi. The Zhuangzi is a compilation of writings principally by the philosopher Zhuang Zi (late 4th century BC), a pivotal figure in classical Daoism. As early as the 3rd century BC, the prose style the Zhuangzi was widely valued as a respite from the moralizing, dry texts of Confucius. As such, the Zhuangzi was often favored by the Chinese intellectual literati, who appreciated its philosophical subtlety, humanistic reflection and ethical relativism.
