Catalogue Note
Koo Mei is one of the few female artists recognized among the renowned modern ink painters of Hong Kong. Born in Guangzhou, Koo Mei moved to Hong Kong in 1950 and currently resides in Canada. She began painting in 1962 under the tutelage of renowned masters Zhao Shaoang, Hu Nianzu and Lu Shoukun, and in the 1970s gave up her career as a successful singer and actress in order to devote herself full-time to the arts. Often depicting snow-clad mountains and winter scenes, Koo's distinctive works are defined by realistic yet modernist landscapes executed by way of meticulously layered ink and colour. Koo has exhibited her works in dozens of exhibitions between Asia and North America, and was awarded the Urban Council Artist Award by the Hong Kong Museum of Art in 1977.
